Data methodology

How Games4Cast estimates work

Games4Cast combines measured market evidence with modeled estimates. The distinction matters because observed signals and estimated commercial outcomes are not the same thing.

Measured evidence and modeled estimates

Measured source data

Measured source data consists of observations recorded from available sources—such as store information, price and discount history, CCU observations, and disclosed milestones. Publisher and developer disclosures are treated as source statements and interpreted in context; they are not assumed to be complete publisher accounts.

Modeled estimates

Units sold, average selling price (ASP), and gross revenue are estimates produced from available evidence. They are not publisher financial disclosures and should not be read as audited or reported results.

A coherent set of estimates

Estimated gross revenue is derived from estimated units sold and estimated ASP. This keeps the three estimates internally consistent: gross revenue is not modeled as a separate figure that could conflict with the displayed units and ASP estimates.

How evidence is interpreted

CCU is evidence, not a sales conversion

Concurrent players (CCU) provide momentum and engagement evidence. CCU is never directly converted into estimated units sold: active players can include new buyers, returning players, and players responding to events or updates.

Disclosed milestones need context

When a publisher or developer discloses a milestone, Games4Cast interprets it using the disclosure date, platform scope, named metric, and whether the figure is an exact value or a lower bound. A milestone is not assumed to describe all platforms, all time periods, or a different metric.

Why an estimate can change

Estimates may change when new observations become available or the model is updated. Launch events, discounts, and new publisher disclosures can materially change the evidence available for a game. A revision therefore does not necessarily mean the earlier estimate was a reported fact that changed; it means the modeled view was recalculated from a different evidence set or methodology.

Limitations

  • Incomplete public dataPublic evidence can be missing, delayed, or insufficient to resolve every signal.
  • Young gamesRecently launched games have shorter histories and fewer observations, increasing uncertainty.
  • Platform ambiguityPublic statements may not clearly separate Steam from other platforms.
  • Returners versus buyersEvent-driven CCU can reflect returning players rather than newly purchased units.
  • Pricing complexityRegional pricing, bundles, and promotions can make the effective average selling price difficult to observe precisely.
  • UncertaintyEstimates are uncertain and may differ from actual publisher results.

Data Sources and Credits

Games4Cast evaluates public Steam market observations—including store information, pricing, reviews, CCU signals, and developer or publisher disclosures—in context. These observations inform our models, but the resulting commercial figures remain estimates rather than reported financial results.

Source credits identify provenance and do not imply sponsorship, endorsement, or affiliation.
